City of Lawton Mourns the Passing of Police Chief James T. Smith

The City of Lawton announces with profound sadness the passing of Police Chief James T. Smith, 66, who died on January 22, 2026.

Chief Smith dedicated over 35 years to public safety. His distinguished career began in Kentucky before he brought his leadership to Lawton in 2012. Here, he championed community partnerships, officer wellness, and was instrumental in planning the city’s new Public Safety Facility. A retired U.S. Army Colonel, he seamlessly blended military discipline with compassionate policing.

His impact was recognized statewide. In 2024, he received the prestigious William “Bill” Tilghman Public Service Award. In 2025, he was named Large Agency Chief of the Year for his exemplary leadership and service.

City Manager John Ratliff expressed the community’s deep sorrow, extending condolences to Chief Smith’s family and requesting privacy.

“Chief Smith was more than a law enforcement leader,” said Mayor Stan Booker. “He was a mentor, a protector, and a steady presence. Lawton is better because of his service.”

Chief James T. Smith is remembered as a pillar of the community—a leader whose legacy of integrity, commitment, and unwavering dedication to Lawton will endure.
