The Duluth High School community is grappling with profound grief following the tragic death of Sylvia Akers, a cherished special education teacher and assistant girls’ basketball coach. Akers, 54, died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 985 on the evening of January 21.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash occurred near Sprout Spring Road as Akers was returning home from a Wildcats basketball game. Her vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons and overturned. Despite being transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, she succumbed to her injuries.

Her impact extended far beyond the classroom and court, remembered as a mentor and friend. In a heartbreaking twist, Akers had recently signed her retirement paperwork with Gwinnett County Public Schools.

“Coach Sylvia Akers was the light of our program,” said head coach Shyla Dunford. “She was everything we needed her to be — the mentor, coach, comic relief and truth-teller all at once. Her heart was pure and full of love.”
